Job Summary
The PACU Registered Nurse provides high-quality, compassionate care to adult and pediatric patients recovering from ophthalmology procedures performed under monitored anesthesia care (MAC) and general anesthesia. This role includes responsibility for patient recovery, discharge readiness, and closing and securing the 6th floor PACU unit at the end of the shift.

Job Summary
The PACU Registered Nurse provides high-quality, compassionate care to adult and pediatric patients recovering from ophthalmology procedures performed under monitored anesthesia care (MAC) and general anesthesia. This role includes responsibility for patient recovery, discharge readiness, and closing and securing the 6th floor PACU unit at the end of the shift.
Qualifications
Key Responsibilities:
- Recover ophthalmology patients post-MAC and general anesthesia according to PACU standards and institutional policies.
- Monitor vital signs, airway status, pain, and surgical sites; administer medications and treatments as prescribed.
- Provide patient and family education regarding post-operative care and discharge instructions.
- Collaborate with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and perioperative team members to ensure safe and efficient patient throughput.
- Manage patient flow to maintain timeliness of care and support OR efficiency.
- Complete required documentation in the electronic health record accurately and promptly.
- Perform closing tasks for the 6th floor PACU, including securing equipment, supplies, and the physical environment.
- Act as a resource for other team members and assist with orientation of new staff as needed.
- Adhere to all safety, infection prevention, and quality standards.
- Current RN license in [State] (Massachusetts, if at Mass Eye and Ear).
- Minimum of 1–2 years of recent PACU, ICU, or critical care nursing experience preferred.
- BLS and ACLS certification required; PALS certification strongly preferred.
- Strong critical-thinking skills, adaptability, and ability to work independently.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM, variable days as scheduled.
- May include rotating weekends or holidays based on departmental needs.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Lift and position patients or equipment as needed.
